All Music Guide Review
For a budget-line collection, EMI-Capitol Special Markets' It's Called Doo Wop is surprisingly good. Instead of containing a skimpy 20 tracks, like most budget collections, it features a full 20 tracks, divided equally between classic singles and intriguing rarities. None of the cuts are remakes -- there are originals of the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Nite," and the Jacks' "Why Don't You Write Me," Little Anthony's "Shimmy Shimmy Koko-Bop," Dion's "I Wonder Why" and "A Teenager in Love," Lee Andrews & the Hearts' "Try the Impossible," the Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9," the Falcons' "You're So Fine," the Mystics' "Hushabye" and Randy & the Rainbows' "Denise," and that alone makes it worthwhile. To have a number of forgotten gems on top of those singles makes It's Called Doo Wop an excellent bargain for budget-minded doo wop fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
