Submit Your ReviewA variety of performances by pianist Joe Sullivan were reissued on this 1998 Jazz Unlimited CD from Denmark. The great stride pianist is heard on nine mostly easy-listening solos from 1944 and a couple hotter numbers from the following year, as well as with a quintet (which also includes clarinetist Archie Rosati and guitarist Ulysses Livingston) in 1945 and on eight obscure, previously unpublished Fats Waller songs in a trio in 1952; the latter had formerly been an Epic LP. In general, the music is relaxed rather than heated, but Sullivan is showcased throughout in prime form. It is particularly interesting hearing the Waller material, some of which deserves to be revived. Recommended for lovers of pre-swing piano. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
