Unlike his other albums, Percussion Orientale is consistent and free of cheesy, gimmicky numbers. Not only is this not a "dance" album, it even breaks from the mold of belly-dance albums. While the selections are pop (or popular jazz), from "Caravan" and Raymond Scott's "Twilight in Turkey" to "Orientale," it is an orchestral album with only lightly exotic overtones. No doubt intended to show off Mercury's audiophile series, the album also was issued on regular Mercury with a different jacket. Mildly interesting but not compelling. ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
