All Music Guide Review

The first entry in Tortoise's all-star remix series may be its most provocative. Both U.N.K.L.E. and percussionist John McEntire tackle Millions Now Living Will Never Die's opener, "Djed," albeit to vastly different ends. U.N.K.L.E.'s "Bruise-Blood" remix strips away the soul-jazz swing of the original, emphasizing instead mechanical, even martial rhythms and skittering, chirping effects. With the exception of the vinyl-scratching that closes the track, there's very little to suggest it's the product of human hands. McEntire's "Tjed" is no less percussive, but accelerates the loping groove of the original. He also retains its pastiche structure, creating a far-reaching, sonically daring epic far greater than the sum of its parts. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
