Million Dollar Melodies was one of EMI's earlier pop albums to be released in stereo, and it makes good use of the format, dividing the strings, piano, or whatever the principal instrumental body happens to be, from the wordless male choruses -- left and right -- in ways that must have delighted early hi-fi enthusiasts. The material consists of film themes that run the gamut from the expected ("Love Is a Many Splendored Thing") to the surprising ("Unchained Melody," complete with strings, piano, and solo trumpet carrying the melody). The music all gets a requisite light touch, and those elements of inventiveness that helped keep Ray Martin among the tiny handful of big-band/easy listening artists to remain successful amid the boom in rock & roll. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
