    All Music Guide Review

Compiled as a tie-in with "Superstation" WTBS's comedy-heavy broadcast schedule, TBS Tunes: Fun Tracks, Wisecracks is a 16-track collection of "funny songs" of various stripes, and while most fall short of the dreaded status of the "novelty song," most of these tunes aim for an easy laugh and hit their target well enough. There's a bunch of pop-punk takes on popular culture ("1985" by Bowling for Soup, "Mr. Spock" by Nerf Herder, the latter of which is far more bitter than witty), some oddball renditions of popular hits (Cake's low-affect cover of "I Will Survive" and the Supersuckers' rocking out on OutKast's "Hey Ya!"), more than a little willful strangeness (cuts from Ween, Wall of Voodoo, and the Presidents of the United States of America), cynical numbers about the state of romance ("The Geeks Get the Girls" from American Hi-Fi, "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit), and a few popular tracks that were a bit off mainstream radio's center ("Hell" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers, "Walk the Dinosaur" from Was [Not Was], and They Might Be Giants's "Birdhouse in Your Soul"). If you're in the market for aural wackiness, there's plenty here, and there's also some fine music along the way, especially Was (Not Was)'s high-concept funk, Devo's precision mechano-pop, and the Supersuckers' Marshall-fueled OutKast rip. TBS Tunes isn't going to change anyone's life, but it's good clean fun and a better way to kill 53 minutes than watching television (but please don't tell the folks at WTBS that). ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
