Zaperoko

Seeking to bring the world a fresh perspective on the music of Puerto Rico, and how it relates to the rest of the Latin continuum, Zaperoko has created a mix of Cuban guaguancó, songo, and rhumba with their native plena puertorriqueña. The result is a particularly rich salsa, the likes of which is not often found on the world music table. Their 2006 release 3 features not only an inventive look at the way tropical rhythms can work together, but how other ingredients interact, such as a fresh look at the use of electric instrumentation, jazz harmonies, and linear writing concepts. Though this type of experiment could have disastrous consequences in less experienced hands, the leader of the group, trombonist Edwin Feliciano, teams with an absolutely top-notch band, resulting in one of the finest Latin jazz gems of the year. Rhythm section players include the fabulous John Benítez on bass, conga god Giovanni Hidalgo, famous tresero and vocalist Nelson Gonzalez, drummer Richie Flores, and the list goes on. One of the very first releases for the fledgling Libertad Records can be counted as a great success.
