Guitarist Liberty Ellman's set of ten originals for his versatile sextet range from free funk to sound explorations, from introspective stretches as close to modern classical music as to jazz to some more straightforward improvisations. The overall music is a bit dry and takes several listens to fully appreciate. While there are individual spots and the tuba playing of Jose Davila is particularly impressive (giving the group its own personality), the emphasis is on the sound of the ensembles and the often slow development of the music. This music will take a bit of patience but it is worth the time for Ellman's music is quite original and subtle. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
