In 1998 the Giants of Jazz label released a 23-track sampler of recordings made between 1926 and 1939 by Jelly Roll Morton, the man who (like W.C. Handy, Tony Jackson, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Luckey Roberts, and Willie "The Lion" Smith) engineered the evolution of ragtime, blues, French quadrilles, and Afro-Caribbean dance rhythms into jazz, that hybrid of hybrids. This is not a chronologically precise survey. It is a jumbled assortment combining some of Morton's trio and Red Hot Peppers recordings from the 1920s with selections from his New Orleans Jazzmen' Bluebird sessions of September 1939. It's a nice taste of Jelly's best work. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide
