    All Music Guide Review

Michael Mann's big-screen adaptation of his groundbreaking (in the '80s) television crime drama Miami Vice was bereft of all of the pastel shirts and white loafers that defined its predecessor. Jan Hammer's synth-heavy theme song and Glenn Frey's ode to the "Smuggler's Blues" were nowhere to be found, replaced by a combination of alternative metal, wintry electronica, neo-soul, and dance-heavy indie rock -- Nonpoint's rendition of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" sounds like the version Chris Daugherty would have done on the 2006 season of American Idol. For the most part, standout cuts from Moby ("Anthem"), Goldfrapp ("Strict Machine"), and Mogwai ("Auto Rock") retain the sweltering, 2 a.m. vibe of the original, but there's nothing memorable or "defining" about anything on this bleak and mostly forgettable slice of reheated late-night pizza. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
