Olympia, WA's Yoyo Recordings released Periscope: Another Yoyo Compilation in 1994. The disc debuted many indie rock acts to a national audience, including Go Sailor, Love As Laughter, Cub, Neutral Milk Hotel, Team Dresch, and Beck. The 17-song disc begins with the punk sounds of Mukilteo Fairies on the song "Bloody Breath." The second track, featuring the twee pop sounds of Go Sailor on "Last Year," instantly creates a startling dichotomy of diverse sounds on the disc. The playful and disjointed sounds of Love As Laughter's "Super Christ" are followed by the sweet lo-fi sounds of Tummy Ache on "Purple Violet Squish." That song is followed by one of the most stellar songs on the disc, the steady and catchy "Orange Juice Star" by New York's Raggedy Ann. Vancouver's Cub offers up cuddlecore sounds on "Flaming Red Bobsled," which was later featured on the band's Come out, Come Out album. The Crabs present their punk-pop on "Chubbette," while Japan's Bloodthirsty Butchers contribute their scattered and experimental sounds on "I Hate You." "Bucket" by Neutral Milk Hotel is easily one of the collection's most startling offerings. The minimalist lo-fi sounds of Tattle Tale are offered up on "Girls Go to Heaven," complete with cello. The cathartic pop-punk of Team Dresch is featured on "Fake Fight." Beck's "The World May Lose Its Motion" is the perfect disc-closer, featuring the folk sound that was featured on his One Foot in the Grave album on K Records. The disc sounds like an album sampler, with its scattered sounds and various tempos. Oddly enough, many of these artists never released an album on Yoyo.
