All Music Guide Review
The Universal label played it fast and loose when they stuck "reggae" on the cover, but that doesn't mean Reggae 2006 isn't a pool party starter. If you're wondering how any "reggae" compilation can feature the Ying Yang Twins, it's because rapper Pitbull guests on their cut "Shake," and Pitbull is influenced by Jamaican music by way of reggaeton, the Latin genre that is most influenced by dancehall. That's how far the definition of "reggae" stretches. Still, tracks like Lil' Kim's hip-hop anthem "Lighters Up" have enough of a sunshine groove to be included and the reggaeton is prime, represented by the huge names Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Wisin & Yandel. These stretches outside of the genre are anchored by some great choices from the world of dancehall with both L.O.C.'s amusing "Ring Ding Ding" and Jamesy P's clubby, almost soca "Nookie" being the best surprises. Anyone looking to surround the hits they know -- Sean Paul's "We Be Burnin'," Rihanna's "Pon De Replay," Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" -- with the best the B-List has to offer won't be disappointed. Just don't expect anything close to Bob Marley. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
