Pre-Steely Dan, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen did a lot of work, not all of it was recorded quite so well, or fares as well, either, but this soundtrack to Richard Pryor's film, You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It...Or You'll Lose That Beat issued in 1971 immediately pre-dates the creation and recording of Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill. Reissued by Cherry Red's crazy El label, these eight cuts are a significant signpost for Becker and Fagen collectors, and of general interest to rock fans interested in the era. The loose, jazzy, slick R&B feel of most of these cuts is literally a trial run. Denny Diaz lends his axe hand to these tracks, as does vocalist Kenny Vance, who also produced the set. The title track, "Dog Eat Dog," and the elegantly nocturnal rock balladry of "Red Giant/Green Dwarf" are the album's high points. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
