Dusty Springfield

This DVD from Universal -- which, as of mid-2006, is only available as a Region 2 disc, playable outside of Europe only on multi-region players or properly set up computers -- covers territory that has so far been missed by other Dusty Springfield digital discs. For starters, it opens with her original trio, the Springfields, doing a genuinely live (as opposed to mimed) rendition of "Island of Dream," before jumping to a mimed rendition of Springfield doing "Once Upon a Time" (but, on the other hand, she looks to sensation, one can forgive the miming). Most of the material here is licensed from either German television or the BBC, and there's one priceless clip -- of Springfield performing with her backing band the Echoes -- of "In the Middle of Nowhere," in a genuine live rendition. There are no bonus features but the transfers are excellent and the sound is mastered at an extremely healthy volume, and as a clip compilation this is a first-rate production. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
