The second-generation English purveyors of ska get a classy treatment thanks to import heavyweights Varese Sarabande. Packed with 21 top-notch sides, Rudies on the Run: The British Ska Anthology focuses on the cream that came out of this punk-inspired, late-'70s and early-'80s phenomenon. Pivotal blokes the Specials take up the lion's share, with such highlights and hits as "Gangsters," "Ghost Town," and a cover of original rocksteady group the Pioneers' "Longshot Kick de Bucket." The most successful band of the bunch, the English Beat, are also well represented with their biggest smash, "Mirror in the Bathroom," and a convincing take on the Miracles' classic "Tears of a Clown." Filling out the mix, relative underlings the Selector and Bad Manners are featured on some of their best and most popular cuts ("Three Minute Hero," "Lip up Fatty"). A perfect introduction to music that merits even further investigation. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
