All Music Guide Review
There's no real rhyme or reason behind MCA Special Products' Rock the 80's -- the only thing tying the songs together is that they're either on MCA or an affilliated label -- but that doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable collection. As a matter of fact, most of the tracks are quite fun, either as artifacts or as genuinely strong pop confections. Sure, Kansas' "All I Wanted," Nelson's "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection," Boston's "Amanda," Night Ranger's "(You Can Still) Rock in America" and Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" may sound dated to some ears, but Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On," Asia's "Heat of the Moment," Men Without Hats' "The Safety Dance," Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" and Quarterflash's "Harden My Heart" all sound really good, which is reason enough for curious listeners to pick up this budget-line collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
