Unlike its '70s cousin, BMG Special Products' Hits from the Underground: The 80's contains ten songs that were big hits on '80s college radio -- and that includes cuts from oldtimers Lou Reed ("No Money Down") and Graham Parker ("Get Started, Start a Fire"). Apart from Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy," Nails' "Juanita, Juanita" and A Flock of Seagulls' "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph)," the collection leans toward the mid- to late '80s, with cuts by Fairground Attraction ("Perfect"), Love and Rockets ("No New Tale to Tell"), the Del Fuegos ("Move with Me Sister"), Camper Van Beethoven ("Take the Skinheads Bowling") and the Stone Roses ("I Wanna Be Adored"). It covers a lot of ground and thereby is a little uneven, but it performs its job respectably and is quite entertaining -- which is enough to make it a worthwhile budget-line collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
