The sort of box set for which a 200-CD jukebox seems entirely appropriate, this 12-CD anthology actually compiles other Dressed to Kill anthology sets, which means that there is the odd repeated cut here and there (in this context, it fits with the flow.) It also means that the box never quite stays fixed in one place on the ambient/dub/space/chill-out landscape, instead managing to flow comfortably from one kind of groove to another with something approaching an organic feel -- one that somehow manages to incorporate Hawkwind's "Space Chase" in the relative vicinity of the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds." There is, of course, a great deal of post-Kraftwerk percussion, retro-futuristic synthesizer noises that sound like a void-enriched hail to T.O.N.T.O, and much odd sampling. The post-melodic school dominates, too, with pieces often developing out of a series of loops -- given the right state of mind, the resulting mesmeric effect is pleasant and mind-opening. While there is a lot here, it is varied enough, even within individual discs, to prevent the onset of boredom -- otherwise likely to be an easy achievement, given the 15 hours or so represented over the dozen discs. Fortunately, even the loopmeisters vary significantly, and the producers have seen fit to salt in a handful of electronic classical pieces and some contemporary experimental work, such as David Troop's "Bodies of Water," which sounds like a concerto for midnight cats. Overall, if you need a low-cost but extensive musical overview of several related genres of electronic music in the '90s, then this set is definitely an item for the shopping list. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
