    Lyrics from Varsity Blues

    All Music Guide Review

Varsity Blues was significant not as the first on-screen teaming of James Van Der Beek and Jon Voight, but as Van Der Beek's film debut. The teen football saga was pitched straight at the teen and jock audience, and accordingly, the accompanying soundtrack consists primarily of hard rock designed to rile up either sports fans or crazed adolescents. And it doesn't play favorites, either, choosing to run the gamut from Van Halen's classic "Hot for Teacher" to the Foo Fighters' anti-anthem "My Hero," which was all over the trailers. A bunch of new(er) material has been added, too, including Monster Magnet's recording of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams." The end result is a bit of a mishmash, much like all soundtrack albums, but it has to be said that it is more focused and thereby listenable than many of its mass-produced companions, even if it still is pretty lightweight. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
