All Music Guide Review
Unlike Immergent's Live Rock Masters collection, which is also a DualDisc package, Classic Rock Masters: Current Music isn't at all deceptive. When they say "Classic Rock Masters," they tell the truth, and it is also "current music" by these acts, so original lineups are almost nowhere to be found. That's not always a bad thing: in Lynyrd Skynyrd's case, for example: Johnny Van Zant has stepped in and taken Ronnie Van Zant's place and the band rocks pretty hard and writes decent material. Likewise, Queensrÿche can still tear it up; Eddie Money has always been Eddie Money, always excellent in other words, and .38 Special has been trying to nail the pop hit since "Hold on Loosely." While they've not succeeded, it doesn't mean they aren't writing and recording great songs. But these are the exceptions to the rule, and prospective buyers would be better served looking at those artists' individual titles. That said, who needs another solo record by Gene Simmons? Here it's exactly what one would expect: bad, over-produced blowhard rock. The Blondie material is embarrassing, as are cuts by Styx (one could argue whether they were ever any good anyway), and Blue Öyster Cult's is barely worth mentioning. Be forewarned. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
