Peak Time is a quick run through DJ Tonka's best-known productions, sequenced in a dancefloor narrative and, quite unexpectedly, mixed by Tonka himself with a real eagerness over his own material. There's an obvious flavor to Tonka's work: enjoyable, non-aggressive breakbeat dance music, U.S. garage given a Groove Armada swing, and sunlit disco funk plump with pianos and frequent diva outbursts. Occasionally, Tonka shows an oddball charm on the same level as Freddy Fresh, DJ Dan, and old-school friend Ian Pooley ("Phun-Ky" had long been a live favorite of Norman Cook's). The B-52's' "Love Shack," to use the album's most spirited example, is chased down, roped down, drugged down, and given an acid-brass electro-funk makeover. And there's nothing wrong with that. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide
