Here are two oddly paired David "Fathead" Newman recordings. The first and better of the two is The Many Facets of David Newman. It features a wealth of R&B and soul-oriented material, including fine readings of Stevie Wonder's "Sylvia" and Curtis Mayfield's "We're a Winner." There are also a number of excellent, deep, slow grooving originals such as "Headstart," "Shiloh," and "Chained No More." Drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and bassist Chuck Rainey are in the house for most of this session. Heads Up, in contrast, was recorded in 1987, and includes vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Kirk Lightsey, drummer Eddie Gladden and bassist David Williams. The tunes here are much more in the jazz tradition and include Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'" with a great Lightsey solo, Clifford Brown's "Delilah," and Gus Khan's nugget "Makin Whoopee." ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
