Organist Mel Davis' It's About Time is a throwback to the late '60s/early '70s. His music, which is funky, a bit poppish, bluesy and sometimes commercial, features a few throwaway vocals but also contains some nice grooving organ and occasional solos from the fine sidemen. While nothing all that substantial occurs, the mixture of basic originals and covers of tunes by the Crusaders, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff is pleasing, working well as background music. Mel Davis has a fairly original sound on organ. Fans of the idiom will enjoy this effort. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
