Jack Cortner is a veteran composer/arranger who may not be a familiar name to the average jazz fan, because most of his charts have been in a commercial setting, but he has long been writing arrangements for trumpeter Marvin Stamm. On this swinging big-band session, Cortner's impressive charts make one wish he had been able to consistently work in such a setting on a regular basis. Featured soloists include Stamm (also heard on flügelhorn), pianist Bill Mays (who often works with Stamm for recordings, concerts, and workshops), trombonist Jim Pugh, and saxophonist Dave Tofani. Highlights include the bold treatment of "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise," the chugging Count Basie-like "On the Trail," and Cortner's whimsical swinger "Flimflam Ma'am." Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
