Charlie Christian has to be one of the least likely subjects for a documentary, since the innovative but short-lived guitarist never actually appeared on film and passed away back in 1942. However, for this video, Gary Rhodes tracked down many of Christian's childhood friends and associates from Oklahoma, who shed light on the pioneering electric guitarist's earlier and more obscure days. By using excerpts from the interviews (which also include comments from Jay McShann, Herb Ellis, and briefly Lionel Hampton) and many rare photos, Rhodes was able to piece together Christian's truncated but significant life. Although one wishes he had talked more about Charlie Christian's musical accomplishments, this is a worthy project. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
