The pachanga lends itself well to René Bloch's strength of arranging around a steady, easily followed dance beat. Unlike his previous cha cha and mambo albums, however, La Pachanga has the natural confidence of a top Latin charanga; Bloch seems to be saying, "We're going to play whatever we want, and you're going to dance to it all." While authentic in most ways, the vocal flourishes and guitar add a light-hearted campiness which, frankly, charangas desperately need. The flute and strings of most charangas can become tedious, but saxophonist Bloch never lets them dominate to distraction. The version of "La Pachanga," with a female vocalist singing in English and Spanish around flute and guitar solos, is as dynamic as any. ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
