    All Music Guide Review

In California, the term "low rider" refers to young Mexican-Americans who cruise around in cars that they do a great deal of work on while listening to music that they carefully select. The low rider subculture (which War saluted with its 1975 hit "Low Rider") has been passed down from one generation to the next. While the low riders of the '50s and '60s favored doo wop and soul music, the post-Baby Boomer low riders of the '80s and '90s were seriously into rap. Coast Ridas is a 1999 rap compilation aimed at low riders. The CD's primary emphasis is on West Coast rappers, and World Movement has included likable selections by Latino MCs ranging from Lighter Shade of Brown (which has a very R&B-flavored tune in "Whatever You Want") to the quirky, Cypress Hill-influenced Funkdoobiest ("Doobie Knows"). But the collection doesn't focus on Latino rappers exclusively -- rather, it's general theme is rap that would appeal to low riders, and that also includes material by DJ Quik, 2nd II None, Tha Alkaholiks and other Black MCs. Coast Ridas isn't a great collection, but it's a decent one that has its moments. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
