Another one of Mastercuts' three-disc grab bag affairs, Soul Weekender emphasizes the '70s and '80s but extends to the following decades, balancing classics (from Lonnie Liston Smith's frantic but heavenly jazz-funk gem "Expansions" to Keni Burke's kicked back but stimulating "Keep Risin' to the Top") with deeper selections and decent but mostly forgettable material from obscure modern acts like Angela Love and Mo Blu. It shifts between styles and eras in a jarring way, not unlike Norman and Joey Jay's Good Times series, yet it is not nearly as discerning or all that concerned with a sense of flow.
