Disappointingly, Grandmasters Remix includes no remixing work by DJ Muggs, who'd produced the original Grandmasters album on his own. Instead, it's comprised of remixes by a roster of relatively unknown producers, with DJ Khalil standing out as the one marquee name. While many of the remixes are creative and well-produced, anyone expecting remix work by Muggs -- an understandable expectation, given the packaging, which leads one to believe that this is strictly a Muggs-and-GZA affair -- is sure to be disappointed, at least to some extent. Grandmasters was an impressive album, though, so there's still plenty of value here. For instance, GZA's rhymes remain intact, and while sometimes they don't flow all that well with the remixes, the rhymes are still deep and thrilling. Plus, the sequencing remains the same, so song for song Grandmasters Remix plays like an alternate version of its source. All of this doesn't amount to enough to entice anyone who passed on Grandmasters the first time, but for those who love that album, Grandmasters Remix might be worth checking out. An added attraction is a bonus DVD featuring tour and studio footage. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
