Jazz pianist Koji Goto is developing his own distinctive style on his second CD as a leader. Accompanied by bassist Larry Grenadier (who appears on numerous recordings by pianist Brad Mehldau) and veteran drummer Harvey Mason, Goto's lyrical side, heard in lush pieces like the Impressionistic "Hope" and the bittersweet ballad "Somewhere in Time" shows the influence of players such as the late Bill Evans, though his driving works like "48th Street" indicate a post-bop direction. He has an obvious love for the late Michel Petrucciani, romping through the late Frenchman's "Little Piece in C for U" and offering a sensitive solo treatment of his gorgeous ballad "Love Letters." In addition to Goto's compelling originals, he is open to modern rock as well, adapting Sting's "La Belle Dane Sans Regrets" into a thoughtful jazz arrangement. Warmly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
