All Music Guide Review

Fans of spare, thoughtful indie rock have been awaiting Who You Are, Cary Brothers' debut full-length, since he stole moviegoer's hearts with "Blue Eyes," his simple but affecting contribution to 2003's Grammy-winning Garden State soundtrack. Their faith in the L.A. singer/songwriter was not misplaced, even if only a few songs on this 11-track disc are as capable of generating a goosebump epidemic. "Ride," a song that made it onto the soundtrack of another Zach Braff vehicle, The Last Kiss, is one of them; "Jealousy," a navel-gazing pop track that issues from the honest, autobiographical-seeming place Brothers has a knack for writing from, is another. Elsewhere, Brothers' songs meander pleasantly, but they don't get close enough to bite. That's not to say he doesn't show signs of becoming a consistently mesmerizing performer, though. Occasionally, as on "If You Were Here," he drops a metaphor that comes across both faded and vivid but uniformly beautiful: "Just like the rain I'll always be fallin'," he sings with a voice full of clear-eyed weariness, "Only to rise and fall again." ~ Tammy La Gorce, All Music Guide

  • Who You Are Notes

from Procrastination Records: “(Brothers is) one of the emerging acoustic talents in Los Angeles... If he'd been old enough in the late ‘60s, he probably would’ve grabbed a few rounds with a young David Crosby or shared a smoke with Joni Mitchell after an appearance together at a local coffeehouse...” - Billboard

In the fair city of Los Angeles, nestled among its movie studios and fault lines, lies Cary Brothers (first name Cary, last name Brothers). Cary’s debut album, Who You Are, is an impassioned, charm-laced collection of his trademark blend of dreamy pop songs. His beautifully full-bodied music glows with a serene contentment – a genuine, down-home allure. Who You Are is a delight from start to finish, marked by Cary’s intimate, heartfelt vocals, clever melodies and astute lyrics.

Despite the fact that this is only his first full-length, Cary Brothers’ songs have already appeared on the NBC sitcom Scrubs, the FOX mystery Bones, WB's Smallville, and the successful medical dramas Grey's Anatomy and ER. Brothers' lyrical ballad "Blue Eyes" was featured on the platinum-selling, Grammy-winning soundtrack to the hit indie film Garden State. And, this past summer, Brothers' song "Ride" (which can also be found on Who You Are) appeared on the soundtrack to the feature film The Last Kiss, starring Zach Braff, Rachel Bilson and Casey Affleck. Brothers has also performed on the The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Scrubs.
