The Electric Flag's first two albums are combined onto one CD on this German reissue, with the addition of basic historical liner notes (in English). Oddly, considering that most people regard the second, Mike Bloomfield-less LP An American Music Band as markedly inferior to the debut A Long Time Comin', it's sequenced so that An American Music Band plays first. That seeming misfire aside, it handily compiles all of their official late-'60s Columbia output onto one disc, though the slightly psychedelic blues-soul-rock of the debut became more routine, straightforward soul-rock when An American Music Band was recorded after the departure of Bloomfield. Of course, this doesn't include everything by the band in its '60s incarnation; they'd recorded the soundtrack to The Trip before their first proper album, and some outtakes and live material appeared on Old Glory: The Best of the Electric Flag. Actually, if you're looking for a single-disc Electric Flag compilation, that 1995 CD (including as it does most of the material from A Long Time Comin') might be the better option than this two-for-one disc. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
