Because of his association with the Windham Hill record label, acoustic guitarist Alex de Grassi is often inappropriately lumped in with new age stylists. In reality, his mastery of finger-picking styles covers a wide stylistic ground while he is also a far more interesting improviser than the typical new age musician, as this 2006 studio performance, videotaped before a live audience in Nashville, proves beyond a doubt. His nearly hour long set includes a rather playful (if all too brief) interpretation of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" and a sensitive rendition of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," along with a dark, intricate take of George Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So." The guitarist also plays a number of originals, including the relaxing ballad "The Water Garden" (which also detours briefly into the Beatles' "Carry That Weight") and the nostalgic "Turning: Turning Back." The numerous close-ups and excellent sound make this recommended DVD of special interest to guitar players. There's also a half-hour long interview of Alex de Grassi following his live set. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
