Modern songwriting ethics for rock bands, as first laid down by the Beatles, led some listeners to be wary of bands that do not write most of their own recorded material. And regardless of the fairness of such concerns, in the case of the American Breed, those concerns turn out to be well-founded. The group's original compositions are solid instrumentally, but typically lack much of anything in the way of melody. The group does a commendable job of performing the selected cover tunes on this, their debut album, but they play them so straight that they're almost undistinguishable from the originals -- and therefore hardly worth seeking out. ~ Brian Egan, All Music Guide
