Xavier Cugat (1900-1990) was a bandleader who became the great purveyor of jazzy Latin lounge music by specializing in the rhumba, mambo, and cha-cha. Released in 2007, Dutton Vocalion's expanded reissue of the LP Cugat's Favorite Rhumbas tripled the number of tracks by tapping into the years 1940-1955. This resulted in an attractive compilation that greatly improves upon the album that appeared under this title in 1954 decorated with the same colorful packaging. Dozens of Cugat collections have materialized since 1990, including live and broadcast performances that beat most of his commercial studio recordings for both authenticity and spontaneity. Perhaps the best way to listen to Cugat is with the good-natured hedonistic nonchalance that characterized his entire public persona. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide
