    All Music Guide Review

A Love greatest hits, it should be cautioned, is not the best way to appreciate a band whose first three albums are better heard in their totality, particularly Forever Changes. It's also true that for a bigger cash splash you can get the two-CD Love Story 1966-1972, which has all of these songs and more (including all of Forever Changes and some good tracks from the first two albums that miss the listing on The Best of Love, like "A Message to Pretty" and "The Castle"). Still, if you do want a one-disc Love best-of, this has a lot of good music and generally pinpoints the highlights of the group's early albums, though the Four Sail tracks and the non-LP 1968 single "Your Mind and We Belong Together"/"Laughing Stock" are in no way as good as the missing tracks from Forever Changes. The packaging and liner notes are good, too, though again it's not nearly as comprehensive as what you'll find on Love Story. [Greatest Hits is an exact reissue of Rhino's 2003 release The Best of Love".] ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

    Best Of Notes

The collection, which totals 22 songs on over 75 minutes of remastered music, draws from Love's four Elektra albums recorded from 1966-1969 - Forever Changes, Love, Da Capo and Four Sail - plus two non-LP singles from the era. Highlights on this essential single disc retrospective also include the Billboard Top 40 single “Seven And Seven Is,” the hits “My Little Red Book” and “She Comes In Colors,” the single “Your Mind And We Belong Together,” and many other classic tracks.

After almost a decade away from touring (which included a stint in prison), Lee came back to performing in 2002 up until his illness and 2006 death from leukemia. In Lee's New York Times obituary, the paper noted, “A recent benefit concert for Mr. Lee's medical expenses, at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan, indicated the breadth of Love's legacy. Among those performing were Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople and Nils Lofgren, along with younger musicians like Ryan Adams, Yo La Tengo and Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.”
