Lyrics from Greatest Hits (Rhino)
All Music Guide Review
As demonstrated on this compilation, which contains his ten biggest hits and two new tracks, Bryan White never made really compelling country music. In fact, the music is only country-flavored pop, the real antecedents for which lie in early '70s folk-rock. When White performs a ballad like "I'm Not Supposed to Love You," it sounds like the Eagles doing "Desperado"; when he turns to a rhythm song like "So Much for Pretending," it recalls Stephen Stills' "Love the One You're With." Clearly, White is more pop than country, and he has paid the price by apparently becoming a has-been before his 25th birthday. The two new songs, "How Long" and "The Way You Look at Me," are typically pleasant, but they don't sound like what's needed to turn things around. As it stands, Greatest Hits, which manages to encapsulate all of White's popular material without including anything from his 1999 album How Lucky I Am, sums up a representative career in the pop-oriented country music of the '90s with no indication that that career will flourish in the future. ~ William Ruhlmann , All Music Guide
