All Music Guide Review
Still collects outtakes and rarities along with a live set recorded on May 2, 1980, just over two weeks prior to Ian Curtis' death. In addition to the atmospheric "Glass" and the haunting funeral march "Dead Souls," the studio sides include four leftover tracks from the sessions for Unknown Pleasures, while the concert set includes performances of seminal tracks such as "Transmission," "Isolation," and "A Means to an End." Although neither as cogent nor as indispensible as the band's two studio records or the Substance compilation, Still is nonetheless a valuable chronicle of Joy Division's remarkable evolution, a growth charted by the inclusion of an early live cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" to the only recorded version of the hypnotic "Ceremony," the ultimate Ian Curtis composition which later resurfaced as the first single from New Order. [Rhino's 2007 Collector's Edition contains the album in remastered form on the first disc. A second disc features the band's February 20, 1980 appearance at High Wycombe Town Hall, including six songs from the soundcheck. Jill Furmanovsky's photos, Peter Saville's design, and Jon Wozencroft's liner notes make up the booklet.] ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
Still (Collector's Edition) Track Listing
Still (Collector's Edition) Notes
The Joy Division compilation STILL was released in October 1981, just over a year after the band's lead singer and principal songwriter Ian Curtis took his own life. It's a fascinating twenty-track collection of studio outtakes, b-sides, live cuts and other rarities from the iconic post-punk band. Coinciding with the U.S. premiere of Control, the new Anton Corbijn-directed film about Curtis' life, Rhino's deluxe STILL (COLLECTOR'S EDITION) is an expanded 2-CD set featuring the original album on Disc One plus a bonus Disc Two presenting historic, previously unreleased live material.
At the time of its original release in '81, all of the material on STILL was previously unissued except for two songs, “Glass” and “Dead Souls,” both stand-out studio recordings from 1978 and 1979, respectively.
Also featured is material from Joy Division's last-ever concert, recorded at Birmingham University in May 1980 including the only time they performed “Ceremony” live (the song would later become a New Order single). Another track captured at Birmingham is “Shadowplay,” a song covered in 2007 by The Killers for the soundtrack for the film Control. Other highlights include a live cover of The Velvet Underground's “Sister Ray” and a 1979 studio recording of “Something Must Break.”
Disc Two presents six songs from a soundcheck and concert recorded live at Town Hall in High Wycombe on February 20, 1980. The eight concert song performances include “Twenty Four Hours,” “The Sound Of Music” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Soundcheck recordings of six selections include “Isolation” and “The Eternal.”
