The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (And Other Frightening Tales) Review

Jason Reeves is far more than your average singer-songwriter. He's something of a modern fairytale scribe. On his Warner debut, The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (And Other Frightening Tales), he weaves a web of love, loss and heartache with 16 poignant pop numbers. He channels John Mayer's knack for a hook, while maintaining a down-to-earth coffeehouse sensitivity. Essentially, Jason straddles the line between big pop anthems and subtle folk musings. It's a balance that many have tried to strike, but few can. Jason does, and he does it very well.

The album possesses a tangible core that's both endearing and infectious. The opening track "Someone Somewhere" blends a dreamy melody with Jason's soft balladry. His voice soars over acoustic chords, resounding with each strum. "You In A Song" brandishes a giant chorus that's extremely hummable. It's the kind of track that'll stand out in any iPod playlist because it's so downright catchy. However, in that song, Jason also paints a lyrical portrait of a relationship strained by distance. His literary sensibility filters through the lyrics seamlessly—always remaining a natural element of the sound. He's crafted smart and memorable pop folk that's often undeniable. "Pretty Eyes" and "Just Friends" find Jason further exploring various relationships at different levels. He tells each story with a reverence for his characters—just like a great author would—and he doesn't hold back. Each song takes on a life of its own. His lyrics often verge on poetic, while maintaining a classic pop sensibility.

Then there's the album's standout track, "New Hampshire." It's a woeful tale of leaving that conjures the actual state's forested suburban loneliness. The vibrant melodies mirror the New Hampshire's lush landscapes, while exploring that classic yearning for an artist to leave his small town. It's soft, honest and heartfelt. What more could you ask for?
