All Music Guide Review

Idina Menzel is not known for being a pop artist. Rather, she is most classically known for originating two modern Broadway dream roles: the outspoken lesbian Maureen in the long-running +Rent, and the misunderstood Elphaba in +Wicked, a role that garnered Menzel a Tony award. Throughout her musical theater career, Menzel attempted to capitalize on her fame and go for pop stardom; her first swing at bat was a frazzled alternative album that couldn't find a proper fan base, the second attempt was a collection of Broadway cover songs, something that never materialized into success. Thus, twelve years after Menzel first graced the stage as Maureen, Menzel releases I Stand. In order to create the perfect pop album, she drafted Glen Ballard, the producer best known for his work on the 16-times platinum Alanis Morisette album Jagged Little Pill. Along with Ballard, Menzel co-wrote most of the lyrics and created a set of pop songs for her most mainstream release yet. Ultimately, the result is a mixed bag. Menzel's voice is staunchly characteristic; it doesn't necessarily format to the catchy synthetics of 2007, and the songs feel inconsistent. "Where Do I Begin?" is awkward at times, as Menzel's musical roots funnel through. The tracks scatter between pop, adult contemporary, and Broadway. On that note, though, a lovely remix of the much acclaimed show tune "Defying Gravity" is pleasant on this collection of tunes. "Brave" is an empowering personal ballad which is a marvel; it's a better version of an American Idol finale song, minus the corny confetti. Plus, the dance track "Gorgeous" is a strong, upbeat number which flows in a similar vein to Kelly Clarkson's "You Found Me." Unfortunately, many of the tracks are impressive but not impressionable. "Forever," "My Own Worst Enemy," and "Better to Have Loved" are indistinguishable among one another. And at only 11-tracks long, Menzel really needed to make a stronger mark on the songs in order to impress a listener. Yet some tracks manage to characterize her better than others, "I Stand" is a personal tune that glistens with potential, and "Don't Let Me Down" is a piano-influenced, midtempo piece that appeals to both a younger and older crowd while maintaining artistic creativity. Finally, "Perfume and Promises" is the most "Menzel" track on the album; it characterizes her best. Ironically, she didn't even pen it, yet it dazzles and spins her voice into a weaving ballad of love and pain. Unfortunately, it is one of too few, and there isn't enough creative definition; Ballard smoothed out Menzel's edges too much, to the point where she falls into the crowd of solid yet insatiable artists who are pleasant, if not punching. Menzel deserves mounds and heaps of praise, and I Stand shows much potential in the big-voiced wonder; the tunes, however, don't support her talent and potential. ~ Matthew Chisling, All Music Guide

pretty & pleasant voice; a very strong voice

I had not heard her music until I listened to this cd. There are three songs that I really enjoy-I Stand, Gorgeous, and My Own Worst Enemy. I Stand is my favorite-cannot get it out of my mind... I am reminded of Shania Twain-different, not as danceable, but just as strong. The more I listen to the cd, the more I like it. Perfect for taking a bath, dealing with a breakup, cleaning the house, or taking a walk! Total chick music, but very good chick music. She has a really pretty & pleasant voice; a very strong voice. I look forward to hearing more from her in the future! With the right song, I can see her with a #1 hit! The only negatives I could find on the cd is that her voice is much better than the songs.

"I Stand",my new favorite CD by a gifted vocalist.

"I Stand," is a wonderful album. With heartfelt statements like, “When all of the madness falls like rain (The song ‘Gorgeous’),” “ Where do I begin my love/Starting with the things I haven’t said enough of (‘Where Do I Begin’),” and, my personal favorite, “If this is the moment I stand here on my own/ If this is the right of passage that somehow leads me home/I might be afraid but it’s my turn to be brave (From the single ‘Brave’).” enjoys a beautiful voice, this album is a gift! From start to end, the album is a showcase of Menzel’s talent as a true songstress.

    Amazing album!

Idina Menzel, a Tony Award Winning Broadway Star for Rent in 1996 and another for Wicked in 2004 (and recently seen on screen in Enchanted), has made the leap from Broadway to music, which very few Broadway stars are able to do. Producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, who worked with rock and pop ranging from the Goo Goo Dolls and Shakira to Dave Matthews and Annie Lennox and of course, Alanis Morrissette co-wrote many of the songs with Menzel and help produce an excellant album.

Idina is a terrific singer, and I was amazed by the ranges she can go with her voice. The music sounds genuine and like it comes from experience. Her talent is obvious and she definitely set some high standards for herself and others to follow. Her Broadway skills helped her show a classic side for this album.

‘I Stand’ marks Menzel’s third solo album and features some of the power ballads that you’d expect from the musicals that she’s been in. Menzel is bold, brassy and has a powerful voice with wide ranges to her notes. She has the ability to sound soft and sweet on one track and intense and emotional on the next. The album talks about hope, faith, love, and loss, and sounds like any one of the numbers could have been from a Broadway show.

One of the better songs on the album is “Gorgeous,” a love song. "Where Do I Begin" is a touching love song, to which Menzel has admitted writing about husband Taye Diggs.
I Stand," which is another tune about believing in oneself, and "Better to Have Loved" talks of pain and loss. "Brave," encourages listeners to have bravery and helps overcome life's troubles with phrases like, "I might be afraid/But it's my turn to be brave."

Menzel's earlier work was raw, and had a strong acoustic sound on her first two albums. Therefore, you are in for a treat with "I Stand" It is full of instruments and backup singers that lend a hand in making this one of her best albums. This album is recommended for all sorts of listeners and ages. Idina Menzel's album "I Stand," is proof that a Broadway star can make a decent pop singer at the same time.

  • I Stand Notes

from Warner Bros. Records: Already a star on Broadway, the charismatic Idina Menzel (“Rent,” “Wicked”) is ready to star on album. To make that happen, she has enlisted the man responsible for launching, or continuing the phenomenal careers of, other recent major female artists. Glen Ballard, best known for Alanis Morissette’s 16-times-platinum Jagged Little Pill and who has worked with Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Annie Lennox and Celine Dion, produced and co-wrote all but one of the songs on I Stand with Menzel.
