Ours

From the long, artsy-wordy title, you might assume that New Jersey's Ours take themselves way too seriously. They kinda do, so your assumption would be on point. However, despite frontman Jimmy Gnecco's penchant for vocal high drama, Mercy (Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy) never crumbles under the weight of the singer's somber vibe.

Ours make beautiful, soul-crushing alt-rock music that’s undoubtedly influenced by Radiohead, namely Thom Yorke's vocals. Produced by Rick Rubin, AKA "He Who Can Do No Wrong Musically," Mercy is a moody, head down record with the capacity to unceremoniously yank your heart out of your chest. Gnecco's high-pitched wail both dares and invites you to share his pain and partake in his emotion. When his vocals soar, he really lets 'em rip, so much so that it's difficult to listen to. Take a listen to the fade out of the opening title track for an example of how Gnecco can wield his larynx like a weapon. But there's something comforting in the shrillness. Mercy is one of those records best suited for heartbreak on the rainiest of days.
