Scars & Souvenirs Review

On Scars and Souveneirs, Theory of a Deadman sound like Alice in Chains for Facebook nation. Sonically, the band oscillates from stoned, chaotic crooning to crunchy screams that make their sophomore effort one hell of a hard rock rollercoaster. The album kicks off with the first single, "So Happy." It sets the tone for the entire record with jagged rhythms and an infectious chorus. Meanwhile, the album traverses a desolate soundscape from the forlorn and pensive "Not Meant to Be" to the outright angry "Bad Girlfriend." Thematically, the tracks shift from relationship breakdowns to depression. It's a tried-and-true palette, but Theory paint their own picture of despair with those classic grunge colors. In the end, these Scars are well worth showing, and they also serve as a much needed lesson in grunge.

All Music Guide Review

Scars and Souvenirs, the third album from Theory of a Deadman, sounds like a rehash of the band's first two albums -- which is to say that it sounds like Nickelback. Chad Kroeger signed them to his 604 Records label in 2001, and throughout Scars and Souvenirs, Theory of a Deadman draw upon the melodies, vocals, choruses, and riffs of Kroeger and company. Many examples abound, but the best is "Not Meant to Be," a song whose melody and chorus bear more than a passing resemblance to All the Right Reasons' "Rockstar." Like their previous effort, Gasoline, Theory of a Deadman turned to producer Howard Benson on Scars and Souvenirs, which could explain why the album sticks to the same sounds and formulas instead of branching out in a new direction. It makes Scars and Souvenirs less then essential, given that nothing has changed. ~ Katherine Fulton, All Music Guide

  • Scars & Souvenirs Notes

from Roadrunner: better you get. We’ve had such a great opportunity to figure out what to do better, how to write a better song and keep building and building. That’s exciting for us.” – Tyler Connolly

Originally from Vancouver B.C. and signed by Chad Kroeger of Nickelback to his 604 Records label (where the band is still signed in Canada), Theory is following up a very successful sophomore album cycle (GASOLINE) that included the huge radio hits “Santa Monica,” “No Surprise” and “Hello Lonely.” Theory are road dogs and expect to be on the road for 2 years straight to support their new album SCARS & SOUVENIRS. The balanced 13-track effort is the polished and passionate testament to seven years of hard work, heavy touring and diligent attention to its craft. From the swirling grinds of the first single “So Happy” to the soaring melodicism of “Not Meant to Be” and “By The Way,” Scars & Souvenirs is a broad-reaching endeavor that puts singer/guitarist Tyler Connolly, guitarist Dave Brenner and bassist Dean Back high in the rock pantheon, achieving creative growth without sacrificing the hard-hitting power that got them here in the first place.

“It”s the Scars & Souvenirs of your life,” Connolly explains. “The songwriting on the record is really about someone’s past or and present, their relationships and how they shape everything. It’s more metaphorical than physical scars and trophies. We’re just a hard-working band, man. We want to be out there for a couple of years and play these songs to everybody we possibly can.” Tyler also contributed guitar and appeared in the video for Chad Kroeger’s #1 smash hit “Hero,” the theme song to the massive Spider-Man movie.
