Marvin Gaye was a brilliant singer who understood phrasing as well as any horn player, so it should come as no surprise that this collection of smooth jazz versions of some of his greatest songs translates so well into a different approach. Gaye was also a subtle and intimate songwriter, and the little gentle turns of melody and phrasing that he built into his compositions make them perfect for jazz interpretation. "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (which Gaye didn't write) aside, the songs presented here seem born for lead horn lines, and "Distant Lover," "Trouble Man," and "What's Going On" all shine with an elegant grace in these new settings. The only thing missing is Gaye's voice, and come to think of it, maybe that's what the world is missing these days, too. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
