This double-disc European import offers something for both the Caravan novice as well as the hardcore fan. One of the highlights of this collection is the radically improved sound. Nowhere is this more evident than on the opening quartet of tracks -- originally on the band's short-lived self-titled album. Where But for Caravan Would I? presents these songs in their original glorious monophonic form for the first time since their original, albeit brief, appearance on MGM/Verve in 1968. Additionally, there are several tracks making their debut release on this compilation. "A Day in the Life of Maurice Haylett" for instance, although it was recorded between the band's debut and their second release -- If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You. In the Land of Grey and Pink, Caravan's third LP, gets royal treatment with four of the album's five tracks presented here. "Golf Girl" and "Love to Love You" have been remixed and augmented beyond their previous fade out. The results are uniformly remarkable. The remainder of the set accurately compiles highlights from For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night, Cunning Stunts, and Caravan & the New Symphonia. The track "Stuck in a Hole" from Cunning Stunts is presented here in its 45 rpm version. All said, Where But for Caravan Would I? is a great collection. The liner notes booklet contains many rare photos and memorabilia from bandmember Pye Hastings.
