This is a deeply idiosyncratic remix compilation, one that consists mostly (but not completely) of remixes done mostly (but not completely) in a reggae-derived style and based mostly (but not completely) on new wave material from the 1980s. Not only is the mix of tracks a bit strange, but there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it: you've got a dub mix of Grace Jones' reggae version of Joy Division's "She's Lost Control" (as if the original weren't weird enough); a collaboration between Mick Hucknall and Adrian Sherwood on an eerie remix of Simply Red's "Picture Book"; a dramatic deconstruction of New Order's "Blue Monday" by Jam & Spoon; and then, thrown into the middle of the program for no apparent reason, an album track from David Byrne and Brian Eno's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and an old Talking Heads single, both in their original, unaltered versions. Elsewhere, Linton Kwesi Johnson appears as a guest on a Manu Chao remix and Massive Attack remixes a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan track. It's craziness. And like most crazy compilations, it's got its share of clunkers, like the pedestrian Will Powers contribution and a rather ho-hum Boozoo Bajou mix of the Tony Joe White classic "Rainy Night in Georgia." But the high points are sheer brilliance: juxtaposing Massive Attack's dark, brooding reticence with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's explosive passion was a stroke of genius, and Lee "Scratch" Perry's remix of Terence Trent D'Arby is a bit less brilliant but is well worth hearing just because it's a Lee "Scratch" Perry remix of Terence Trent D'Arby.
