Once again, it's the instantly memorable, upbeat, radio-ready material that places Mary Mary at the forefront of contemporary gospel. When The Sound was released, the energizing "Get Up" was threatening to make as much of a crossover splash as 2000s "Shackles (Praise You)," and like four other songs front-loaded on Erica and Tina's fifth album -- including the triumphant David Banner feature "Superfriend," the booming/bumping "God in Me," and the rambunctious '60s throwback title track ("Is it all right if I moan?!/Mmmmoooaaannn-nuh!") -- there's more walloping vigor than what can be found in nearly any given modern, platinum-seeking R&B album. The disc's latter half is relatively indistinct, but it could never be said that the duo is going through the motions. The same goes for Erica's husband, undervalued veteran producer/songwriter Warryn Campbell. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

The Sound
Mary Mary
THE SOUND, is hands down Mary Mary’s boldest, most complete work yet—a remarkable milestone in their now decade-long trajectory in music. From top to bottom, THE SOUND sees the tandem stretching their wings into realms rarely explored in music, for a celebration of sound that nearly defies categorization. Assisted by longtime producer Warryn Campbell, the disc melds the twosome’s love of truth-grounded gospel music, yet swathed in a colorful
patchwork of R&B, pop, soul, jazz, electronic music, and then some.
As expected, THE SOUND shows Mary Mary can have church, too. Not ones to shy away from in-your-face declarations of faith, the girls are now more intentional than ever about Whom they adore, without for a moment compromising
their call to innovation and growth. The introspective “Seattle” is a prime example, a pensive prayer that asks the Lord to descend upon the soul the same way rain falls on the Emerald City.
