This three-disc budget set is titled The Great Songwriters, and there are great songs collected here, indeed, all from America's golden age of pop melody, but it could just as easily have been called "The Great Singers" because great melodies require singers to match in order to really unfold, and that very unfolding process happens again and again throughout this delightful compilation. Included are tracks as varied as Dick Haymes' "How Deep Is the Ocean," Bing Crosby's classic versions of "White Christmas" and "Don't Fence Me In," the Ink Spots' "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," and Paul Robeson's sonorous and almost eerily perfect take on "Summertime," to name just a few of the gems peppering this set list. The bottom line is that one gets a whole lot of great music for not too much of a financial investment. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
