We all have grand ambitions, but the duo that comprises N.A.S.A.—DJ Sam Spiegel and DJ Zegon—had the highest set for their debut. Gathering an impressive array of guest vocalists—everyone from the very hot Kanye West, Santogold, and M.I.A. to (now) classic rhymers such as Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, Fatlip, RZA and Del.
Fifteen of the seventeen cuts feature some sort or pairing—you never have just one contributor, and not surprisingly, some work better than others. Opening cut "The People Tree," pairs David Byrne on the chorus with Gift of Gab and Chali 2na, in a funky, J5-esque narrative about coming together. The futuristic, synth sound of "Gifted" teams Kanye with Santogold and Lykke Li, where they dissect the difficulties of being a trendsetter and subsequently, standing the test of time.
However, the oddest pairing of all comes during "Spacious Thoughts," another funk-meets hip-hop arrangement, featuring Kool Keith and Tom Waits. In terms of the "who can out weird the other," Waits' lower than usual, distorted growl makes him the winner; Keith is actually quite normal in this context. For those that wonk on about how today's hip hop has become too much of this or too much of that, N.A.S.A. works well in a throwback, roll-those-windows-down-and-cruise way. A lot of that aspect is missing in popular hip-hop today—not to say that this is better or worse, but this is clearly indicative of a West Coast, Parliament-inspired era of rhyming and beat arrangements.

The Spirit of Apollo Review
All Music Guide Review
Collaboration albums are notoriously difficult to pilot, often needing a veteran hand at the controls. N.A.S.A.'s journey is especially tough, given that they lined up one of the most impressive guest lists ever seen on a debut album. No less than three dozen artists have features on The Spirit of Apollo, and at least ten of them would be the crown jewel on most LPs -- Kanye West, M.I.A., Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santogold, no less than three members of Wu-Tang Clan (one of them deceased), Spank Rock, John Frusciante, Lykke Li, and a trio of alternative godfathers: David Byrne, Tom Waits, and George Clinton. N.A.S.A., a duo of DJs and producers (one American, one Brazilian), have a concept in mind, assembling sounds and styles from around the globe, then smashing them together and watching the results of such a collision, with the attendant revelations of the similarities and differences between people around the world. An ambitious concept, to be sure, and also one that comes rife with expectations when the cast is as star-studded as this. Unfortunately, as rendered by N.A.S.A., the world doesn't sound very exciting. The style of this global melting pot is basically midtempo hip-hop of the Daisy Age variety, laced with verse after verse and chorus after chorus of guest features (most tracks feature at least three). Few of the guests stand out, none of them seem to be speaking to each other, and the result is, ironically, a Babel of voices and sounds that doesn't communicate much of anything. As glorious as these soundclashes are -- Gift of Gab rapping next to David Byrne, Lykke Li singing an airy chorus over Kanye West rhymes and Santogold lines, Karen O next to Ol' Dirty Bastard, and the denouement, where Kool Keith waxes nostalgic over a gutbucket Tom Waits chorus -- they're presented with little rhyme and no reason. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

The Spirit of Apollo Notes
N.A.S.A is an ongoing creative collaboration between two lifelong music aficionados, Squeak E. Clean ad DJ Zegon, and their friends, friends of friends and musical heroes. While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of superstar artists from both coasts of the US, it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, their Anti debut The Spirit of Apollo was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Sam Spiegel (Squeak E. Clean) and Ze Gonzales (DJ Zegon) have done. Brazilian funk provides the roots of the songs and binds them together into a cohesive whole, but from there, the imagination behind The Spirit of Apollo ranges far and wide. Unexpected collaborations abound on the eighteen track release. Tom Waits growls over Kool Keith, Karen O taunts while Ol' Dirty Bastard gives shout-outs to Wu Tang and N.A.S.A from the grave, and David Byrne, Chuck D and others expound on the evils of "Money." In spite of the range of performers, the pairings seem organic, inspired and make perfect sense on the first listen, never coming off as ironic or impulsive.
