Ranging through a mess of styles, the disc takes in late bebop (Bud Powell, James Moody), hard bop (Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd), soul-jazz (Lee Morgan, Horace Silver), and even modal (Herbie Hancock). Along the way, listeners will find stone classics by Monk ("Criss-Cross"), Coltrane ("Blue Train"), Art Blakey ("Moanin'"), and Milt Jackson ("Bag's Groove").
