    All Music Guide Review

SBK/EMI chose to herald their signing of this highly touted band by releasing a five-song EP, four of whose songs turned up on the full-length album Fire Of Freedom only four months later. (The exception, completists note, is "Our Lady Of The Bronx.") But that was enough to let those who hadn't yet heard the news discover that songwriter Larry Kirwan had a unique lyrical perspective embracing his Irish expatriate past with self-deprecatory humor as well as political fervor. (In "Funky Ceili," he winningly sang to a woman he had impregnated and abandoned, inviting her to come live in the Bronx and make more babies! And then there are the working class anthems that would have drawn a smile from Woody Guthrie.) The music was a surprisingly workable blend of traditional Irish folk with rock, reggae, and rap, plus a horn section. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
